“Recovery mode” is not necessarily a bad thing even if the term sounds ominous. Particularly with programmable and/or smart thermostats, it simply indicates a status where the system is active but transitioning at that time. Read on to find out the most common reasons that your thermostat would display “recovery mode.”

Ensuring the Coolness of Your Home

Newer smart thermostats “think” more than their older counterparts. To illustrate this, let’s say that you want to save money on cooling your home when you’re at work, so you program it to be 72 degrees at the time you get home. Older systems would turn on at 5 p.m. if you set it for that time, but newer systems will turn on with enough time to make sure that it’s 72 F at 5 p.m., at which time the system will be in recovery mode.

A Not-Programmed Time

If your thermostat shows “recovery mode” during a period of time for which you haven’t programmed it, then that could indicate a need for a visit from one of our repair technicians. The general rule is that your system should only be in recovery mode during those programmed transition times between thermostat settings.

Unintentional “Programming”

Sometimes, you might want to adjust your thermostat manually for one reason or another. If you do this, then most modern thermostats will adjust your programming based on the preferences for certain temperatures that you show by adjusting your thermostat manually. Essentially, you “program’ the thermostat without actually entering the programming menu.

If you haven’t done either accidental or on-purpose programming, and your thermostat shows “recovery mode” as its current status, then we will very likely be able to help.
